Enrichment at St Edburg's

At our school we believe in the importance of enrichment education and its intrinsic benefits, rather than just the benefits extra-curricular activities may have on academic achievement. This is sometimes referred to as “art for art’s sake”. We think all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, deserve a well-rounded, culturally rich, education.

See links for recent research on the importance of enrichment in schools.

What we offer

At St Edburg’s we offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities across the school year so our pupils develop into confident, resilient and healthy citizens.

Our club uptake is strong - 78% of our pupils attended a club in the academic year 2024/25. We are always looking to improve our offer by gathering regular pupil voice from children who may not have attended a club so far in the year. Our aim is to offer rich experiences to either introduce children to new skills (chess and boxing club are in demand!) or further develop skills where children have shown particular aptitude. Clubs are run by the ‘experts’ amongst our staff and are carefully and coherently planned. To support our inclusive ethos, we offer these clubs on a two-tier basis.

Tier 1 clubs are invite-only, offered to children who have a particular aptitude in the subject. Tier 2 clubs are general invite and are open to all. We prioritise children who have not yet taken part in a club to ensure equitable access via ‘priority invite’. Uptake is tracked.

Tier 2 clubs are general invite and open to all. Since September we have offered the following clubs

In 2025/26 we are offering the following enrichment clubs:

A wide range of experiences
